7/22/73–3/6/2011 From a friend of Zack’s: Zack Lewis’s body was found on the corner of Republican and Federal Street, in Capitol Hill. He was living in a Downtown Emergency Services Center housing unit at the time of his death, and was known and loved there.  An impromptu memorial popped up at Fed/Rep (where a park now is) almost immediately. Susan Kelley was a beloved Real Change vendor on Capitol Hill, outside the 15th Ave City People’s Mercantile (now Walgreens). From Susan’s obituary in Real Change, written by Alex Becker: “Real Change Vendor Susan Kelley passed away Oct. 9. She was 58. When I interviewed Susan in August 2009 for a vendor profile, she gave me this advice: “You can sit and snivel and complain about things that you have no control over in your life, or you can just go forward with it. For me, going forward’s worked.”

From a coworker at Lazarus Day Center: “Mike grew up in the New Miami Hutterite Colony near Conrad, MT.  He left the colony in the early 1980s and came to Seattle, where he lived on the streets.  Mike worked the front desk of the Lazarus Day Center for more than 19 years.  He knew the names and stories of thousands of people and cared deeply for everyone he met.” Mike’s Leaf is placed at the Seattle Justice Center. Gerald had been homeless for many years; he was involved with the Union Gospel Mission, but the Market was his stomping ground. Gerald was Belinda “Storm” Springer’s partner. Sabrina died in a SODO RV lot at the age of 27. She was beloved, and is survived by her parents and two sisters. From a Seattle Times article on Sabrina and her death: “Growing up, Sabrina was sweet and shy. Roxanne “Roxy” Baker:  2/16/56–6/8/18 Roxy Baker died near St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish in Ballard.  She was a beloved member of that community, as well as the partner of Greg Nichols. Gregory Nichols:  8/27/61—4/21/18 From Pastor Britt Olson of St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish: Greg Nichols died in his sleep under the eaves on the north side of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ballard.  He was the partner of 10 years to Roxanne Baker who died two months later under the eaves on the south side of St. Luke’s.  Greg and Roxy arrived in Ballard in Roxy’s car nearly two years before their deaths.  Towards the end, Greg’s heart condition made it difficult for him to get around.  He was a regular at St. Luke’s Edible Hope Kitchen and the Bridge Care Center.  A Memorial Service for Greg and Roxy was held on June…

Vernon Maendele:  5/30/60—5/5/17 Vernon died at Harborview Medical Center. From an Administrator at the Neighborcare Ballard Medical Clinic: “Vernon was a well-loved resident of the Nyer Urness Building for the last few years, where he always took the time to say hi. He was a kind-hearted man who often brought our office candy for patients and staff, and stayed positive even during hard times.
