  • Daravuth Van 1971—2024

    An early morning jogger found a homeless man, 52-year-old Cambodian American Daravuth Van, dead in front of Town Hall on First Hill on February 22, 2024.  The death, determined by Seattle Police to be murder, by an axe, sent a shockwave through the First Hill neighborhood, especially the homeless community.  WHEEL and nearby First Hill businesses helped crowdsource surveillance footage to aid the police investigation, and a suspect was charged March 6.   • Sean Smith 1966-2023

    Sean was a social justice activist who was part of SHARE (Seattle Housing and Resource Effort) from its earliest years.  Projects and organizations he had a hand in include Tent City 3, Tent City4, Nickelsville, El Centro de la Raza, the SHARE Bunkhouse and Cafe Red.  He was loved by many, many people and did much good work in this world.  He is missed beyond measure.   • Derrick Owens 1969-2023

    Derrick was living in Tent City 3 with his girlfriend Maribel when he was killed just outside the encampment. The murder is still unsolved. Derrick is survived by five adult children – Tangeray “Tang” Owens, Kierah “Ki” Owens, Del’fontia “Tray” Elam, Terri “Esha” Elam, Quatavious “Qua” Terry – and five grandkids.
