About WHEEL’s Women in Black numbers, methodologies and protocols

In the year 2000, WHEEL (the Women’s Housing, Equality and Enhancement League), a grassroots organizing effort of homeless/formerly homeless women) founded Women in Black vigils for homeless people who die in King County. All are welcome to join the vigils—women or men, homeless or housed. The vigils last for an hour and are silent. What you wear (black clothing or not) does not matter.

When we began 25 years ago, we prayerfully and deliberately decided to stand only for homeless people who died outside, in a public place or by violence, since these deaths should shock our moral conscience, but were—at the time of our vigil’s founding—often either ignored or treated with victim-blaming contempt.

Over the years, we’ve developed good relations with the King County Medical Examiners Office (MEs). We are beyond grateful for their even-handed, collegial, careful and loving work. Over two decades ago they agreed—at our request–to track homeless deaths, to study them, and to publish monthly lists of homeless deaths.

We do the best job we can with available information. Any mistakes on our Women in Black lists are the responsibility of WHEEL/Women in Black.

In 2024, there are 312 people on our Women in Black list that we know about. These are only the homeless/temporarily housed deaths that occurred outdoors, in public, or by violence.

Since the year 2000, we’ve stood for more than 3,000 women, men and children! These are outdoor, public or violent deaths only, of presumed-homeless and temporarily housed people.
