• University Temple United Methodist Church Leaf Dedication, October 12, 2014

    On Sunday, October 12th, supporters, family, and friends gathered to witness and celebrate the dedication of 14 new Leaves of Remembrance in front of the 15th Avenue NE entrance to University Temple United Methodist Church (1415 NE 43rd). These were the first Leaves laid there! With these Leaves, we remembered these beloved community members: Bob Quinn, Chris Stevens, Renee DeWolf, Lance Loder, Frederick “Teddy” Locke, Frank Zanella, Cindi Colleen Attison, Korey Klein, John Read Avery, Russell Hennen, Joan Schaller, Michael Doubles, Michael Lovelady, and Aaron Burgess.

  • Michael Doubles, 1953—2009

    From Michael’s obituary in the Seattle Times: “Michael James Doubles passed away suddenly, on the morning of Dec. 31, 2009. He was born to Billie Jean Doubles, March 20, 1953. He is survived by sister Lynda Mead, brother Tom Doubles, as well as three nephews and a niece. He was an accomplished musician and composer, playing many styles on trumpet.   • John Read Avery, 1950—2005

    From John’s obituary in the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber: “John Read Avery, formerly of Vashon Island, died April 23, 2005, of a traumatic head injury. He was 55 years old. Mr. Avery was born Jan. 13, 1950, in Seattle, to John MacGlacian Avery and Josephine Read Avery. His mother and a younger brother, William Franklin Avery, died earlier. Survivors include his father, John Avery, sister Mary MacClellan, niece Jennifer Nichols, and numerous cousins, extended family, and friends.   • Frederick “Teddy” Locke, 1946—2011

    From a friend: “He was an excellent guitar player and studio musician. He was very good looking, 6’4”, charming, witty and clever. He looked like George Harrison of the Beatles.   • Lance Loder, 1951—2009

    Lance was a gentle giant.  He managed a U District apartment building while he was able, then became homeless. He was a self-published poet. Lance died on 10/6/09, at age 59.     University Temple Leaves were temporarily moved pending construction. With construction indefinitely postponed, the Leaves were replaced and rededicated on April 23, 2015, with the addition of one new Leaf.
